Q6The moderation room

Moderation Room

Consistency between examiners, proven with numbers.

A random sample of every examiner's scripts is re-marked blind. Differences outside tolerance trigger a third examiner, and outlier examiners are spotted while evaluation is still running.

Capabilities

What Moderation Room does.

Blind random re-checks

A set share of each examiner's scripts is re-marked by a second examiner who cannot see the first marks.

Tolerance rules

If the two marks differ by more than the tolerance you set, a third examiner marks the script and your rule decides the final mark.

Examiner consistency

See each examiner's average, spread and deviation from the subject mean, and pause an examiner whose marking drifts.

Revaluation and photocopy requests

Students apply and pay online, receive a copy of their marked script and get a revaluation result with every step logged.

Totalling verification

Re-totalling requests are answered instantly, since totals are calculated and checked by the system.

Grievance trail

For any script: who marked it, when, what changed and why. Ready for RTI replies and court records.

How it runs

Step by step, in the exam season.

  1. 1

    Sample drawn

The system picks a random share of each examiner's completed scripts.

  2. 2

    Blind re-mark

A second examiner marks the sample without seeing the first marks.

  3. 3

    Tolerance check

Differences within tolerance pass; others go to a third examiner.

  4. 4

    Results locked

Moderated marks are locked and passed to Result Publisher.

In detail

Revaluation without the backlog

Revaluation usually means retrieving booklets from strong rooms. In the Moderation Room, the marked script is already on screen, so a revaluation can be assigned, marked and decided within days.

  • Online application and fee collection
  • Scanned copy of marked script to the student
  • Revaluation by a different examiner
  • Automatic result revision and new mark sheet

Questions

About Moderation Room

Q1Does it handle revaluation?

Yes. Students request a photocopy, re-totalling or revaluation online. The script is re-marked by a different examiner and the result revised automatically.

Q2Can we set different tolerance by subject?

Yes. Tolerance, sample size and the third-examiner rule can be set per course or per question type.
